101. Cllr John Winston Davies, Mayor of St Ives. Photo: George Dellar/Canon EOS600/Fuji 200
Last but by no means least in our collection is John Davies. Known and admired as a hard-working politician, John combines his duties as a Town and District Councillor with his job as manager with a local engineering firm. This year he was elected Mayor of St Ives for the third time in five years and will lead the St Ives community into Year 2001, which many claim is the true start of the new Millennium. His chief concerns are jobs, policing, the local environment and St Ives Heritage. He is chairman of the St Ives Industrialists Association and serves on many other committees too numerous to mention. He is pictured here canvassing for re-election to the District Council in May 2000, a contest he won by a landslide. Born in war-torn East London, there is still a hint of danger about John. He has scuba-dived with dolphins in the Red Sea, paraglided off the top of Mt Babadag in Turkey and survived a crocodile attack in the Gambia. John grew up in Wanstead, the parliamentary constituency of Winston Churchill - hence his middle name. He and his wife Jean and their two daughters moved to St Ives 30 years ago.
