80. Richard Scantlebury, Mann Egerton. Photo: Len Brooks/Pentax Z1/Fuji Sensia 100
Richard started in accountancy and came into the motor trade by chance after working for GKN. He moved from London to St Ives in 1971 and set up PEAR (Performance Engineering and Racing) at London Road, later selling to the Inchcape Group (Mann Egerton) who appointed him dealer principal for the Opel franchise. This was joined by Vauxhall in 1981, establishing the dealership as it still is today. Always a motor sport enthusiast he raced in Formula 3 in the 1960s. He went on to compete in 'Super Saloons' driving a Ford Anglia fitted with a Jaguar E-type engine. Now he cherishes and runs a classic collection that includes an Austin 7 Pearl, an E-type Jaguar V-12, a Daimler Dart SP250 and a Sunbeam Tiger V-8 4.2. For the last 12 years Richard has organised and sponsored the Christmas trad jazz concert at the Burgess Hall, which usually features Chris Barber, and has raised £40,000 for charity with his annual Beaujolais Run. He is pictured here with the Vauxhall Astra and the revised Omega.
