In the 1930s Joe was with the Royal Horse Artillery, and during World War 2 was attached to the Army. He later served as a sergeant in the RAF at Wyton where he was Runway Controller. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1963 for "service and devotion to duty". Joe joined the Royal Ancient Order of Buffaloes in 1956 and is a Role of Honour member, the highest honour in the RAOB. Now 81, he has laid the wreath on Remembrance Day for 28 years.
