51. Frank Dawson. Photo: George Dellar/Canon EOS600/Fuji 200
Frank was born at The Chequers pub where the Permanex factory now stands, and has lived on the Waits for the last 78 years. His father and mother were landlord and landlady of The Bell where the family went to live in 1922. Father, Frank and brother Harry worked as contractors for the Town Council on water services of all kinds. Father was also captain of the fire brigade and Harry drove the fire engine. In the Second World War Frank was in the Royal Corps of Signals. He transferred to the Airborne Division and parachuted into Arnhem where he was one of the lucky few to survive the carnage. Returning home he rejoined his father and served with the Fire Service which was then based in White Hart Lane.
