L.H. Jones & Son Ltd, was started by Mick's father, Laurie, in 1946. The firm originally designed and built river and sea-going cruisers, small yachts and motor sailers. The 13-acre marina site with 120 berths was specially dug and became established in 1958. It is thought to be one of the oldest inland marinas in the country. The boatbuilding staff now undertake refit and repair work. Among the facilities is one of the largest chandlery shops in East Anglia, with a watersports department that holds agencies for the top sailboard brands, and a brokerage department that has become one of the busiest cruiser sales centres in the region.
